Tips for Easier Long Distance Moving

Will you be moving across Canada? Are you already dreading all of the work that is going into the move? If your anxiety and stress are already building, then you have likely come here to find some tips that will help to make things a little easier for you. Fortunately, there are things you can do that will help to relieve some of the work and stress that is involved with moving.

Start with a Plan

One of the main reasons that so many people have problems moving is because they wait until nearly the last minute to get started with the move. They put it off until the last minute, they have no plan, and they end up rushing around, which makes things even more stressful. If you want to make your long distance move as easy as possible, you will want to start by creating a moving plan well before you have to move.

Start looking for moving companies a couple of months before the move and then make sure that you actually start to act on that plan soon. As soon as you know that you are going to be moving, start gathering the supplies that you will need for the move. Begin thinking about the items that you can start to pack into boxes right now and do it. Make sure that these are items you will not be using or need until after the move. The sooner you start packing the easier it will end up being. This tip alone can make a huge difference.

Get Rid of Items You Do Not Need

Why are you taking that old, patched up, inflatable raft with you across the country to Toronto? Why are you hauling around old fashion magazines that you will never read again? If you are like just about everyone else out there, you probably have quite a few items that you simply do not need. If you want to reduce your stress and make the move easier, start getting rid of items right away. Downsize what you have to move, and it can even make the move cheaper.

One of the best things about downsizing is that you don’t have to throw out everything. You will have some items that need to be put into the trash, but others can be donated, given away, or even sold, so you could make some extra cash.

Label It All and Label It Well

When you wait until the last minute, you are likely to just shove things in boxes to get them packed. This means you have no idea why your electric razor also happens to be boxed in with your old Star Wars DVDs. When you start early, though, you will have time to label your boxes. It is important that you label all of your boxes and that you label them with everything that’s inside.

This will take some extra time, but it will be worth it since you will have an easier time finding just what you need after you move into the new place, or even before the move. This is a far better solution than trying to rummage through box after box for your iPad charger.

Keep a Box for First Week Items

The first few days after the move will be hectic. You have a lot to do, and you might even be starting a job within a day or two. Having a box for each member of the family that has about a week’s worth of items they will need can be helpful. You should also have a box of fast meals and snacks that you have readily available. This will make it a little easier for you to settle into your new place. Just make sure that you do not get complacent when it comes to living out of a box.

Have an Unpacking Plan

Sure, you made a solid moving plan and you started packing early… but you never thought about unpacking. This is what many people do. Several months later they are still living out of boxes and they have probably made a couple of forts in that time. Therefore, you want to make sure that you have a plan in place for unpacking, as well.

Make sure the movers know where to put the furniture and where all of the boxes belong. This is where good labeling is going to help you immensely. Unpack the boxes that are most important first. Make a plan on the first two weekends in the home to spend one of the days unpacking. The other day can be spent having fun in your new city or just relaxing.

Relieve Stress

Moving long distance will build up a substantial amount of stress that you don’t need. It will continue to build as the moving day approaches. You should make sure that you take at least one day each week where you have a few hours to decompress. Find something that you like to do and that helps you to relieve stress. This will help to reduce the amount of stress that you are feeling during the move, which means the move itself will feel easier for you.

In fact, there is no reason to stop with these stress relieving activities after the move. This can help when you are unpacking, and probably with other stresses that you have in life moving forward.

The tips above can really help you make long distance moving to Vancouver, Montreal, the U.S. or anywhere else a bit easier. However, you still need to be sure you are working with a good mover. With all of the options available, it is not always easy to know if you are working with the best. Instead, you should consider using our services to find and compare moving estimates rather than just finding a mover on your own. We can help to make this time-consuming aspect of moving a little easier on you.
