The Six Hardest Things to Move

Some things, like books and clothing, are a breeze to pack for a move. They fit in a box easily and won’t be damaged by any bumps or accidents during the moving process. Other items will need disassembled or require special packing techniques, which can make the process more stressful.

The good news is that professional long-distance movers can make a lot of this easier. But it’s still worth understanding what’s more trouble than the rest of the house.

Plants

Many people don’t think of plants when considering hard to move items, but they should. The long drive, changing temperatures, and other unwavering parts of moving can make plants tricky. The best way to handle this is by transferring plants to plastic pots a few weeks before transport. You may also want to bring them in your own vehicle so you can pay attention to temperature changes and any shifting on the journey.

Pianos

Pianos are large, bulky, and shaped strangely as far as transport goes. Then they also have many small parts that are fragile and require great care. Moving with a piano is probably one of the most difficult things to do.

If you need to transport one, get in touch with long-distance movers you plan to use well ahead of moving time to find out how they can help and what the price is. There are also professional piano moving companies but these can be expensive.

Fish Tanks

These are another example of cumbersome items to move, as they are not only large and heavy, but fish don’t always survive the move due to the moving conditions. However, there are ways to increase the chances that your fish survive the move.

You can empty the fish tank most of the way, while leaving some amount of water to keep the existing bacteria for refilling. The fish can be moved to smaller containers using the tank water and be transported that way. They should be stabilized as much as possible so they aren’t sloshing, which is stressful and can harm the fish.

Once you’ve moved in, set up the tank as quickly as you can. Float the fish in their containers in the tank to allow them to acclimate before letting them back in the tank. Watch carefully for several days and ensure no issues crop up.

Artwork

Moving artwork is tricky, especially when it is expensive or has other value for the person who owns it. One thing you can do with framed art is wrap the art in bubble wrap and then secure it with cardboard pieces. You can then box it up and use packing peanuts to prevent moving.

For art that isn’t framed, you should still wrap in bubble tape and place in a box with a durable bottom. Use packing peanuts, or similar, and tape it up. Note on the boxes that the contents are fragile so movers show proper care.

Workout Equipment

Exercise equipment can be heavy and, in some cases, have small parts that need to be moved. You’ll want to disassemble large equipment before packing it. If it cannot be taken apart, you may need specialized equipment to transport this type of equipment. Long-distance movers will have this on hand and be able to take care of the transportation.

Grandfather Clocks

Grandfather clocks require specialized care to disassemble. They require a special sort of gloves to do so, as you can’t touch the parts with your bare hands. Both disassembling and reassembling are huge projects so be aware of that ahead of time. Speak with your moving company to see if they can aid in any way.

As you can see, there are many items that are a bit tougher to move than the rest of your belongings. However, being aware of the needs and having the tools needed will go a long way. Don’t be afraid to contact your moving company to help; that’s what they are trained to do.
